'Da Vinci Code' spotlight

By ROBERT RORKE

WITH the worldwide premiere of the hotly anticipated film version of Dan Brown’s controversial bestseller “The Da Vinci Code” upon us — it opens May 19 — TV networks, both network and cable, are not going to miss out on the chance to delve into the mysteries in the story and the “facts” behind it.

The Discovery Channel will broadcast three new specials that combine art and religion, history and scientific investigation to explore the beliefs of Renaissance master Leonardo Da Vinci as well as the art, architectural and religious history brought so vividly to life in the Brown mega best-seller.

“Da Vinci’s Lost Code,” tonight at 10 p.m., asks the question: was Da Vinci a genius of his time or a religious heretic? The special looks at a series of the artist’s works to see if he expressed Gnostic beliefs and sensibilities therein. Scientists and forensics experts help unravel the clues in a mysterious painting bought at auction 25 years ago

“The Real Da Vinci Code,” which starts at 7 p.m., looks at the Dan Brown best-seller through the eyes of historians. “Conspiracy Files: Secret History of Jesus,” which debuts at 9 p.m., investigates the theory that Jesus survived his crucifixion and fled the Holy Land to live with Mary Magdalene in France.

On network television, “Today” devotes almost an entire week to “The Da Vinci Code.” Co-host Matt Lauer discusses the movie and book from different locations. Lucky Lauer starts on Tuesday in Paris, France, home to The Louvre, a location site for the book and movie. By Wednesday, he’s in Cannes, where the film will open the Cannes Film Festival on May 17. Matt will next go, on Thursday, to Rome, where all the Catholic church’s secrets are kept — in the Vatican. Just to make sure he hasn’t left out any Catholic European countries, Lauer ends his “Da Vinci Code” tour in Barcelona, Spain.
